Dilbèr, soprano

The coloratura soprano Dilbèr was born in Kashgar, a trading centre on the ancient Silk Road, in what is now the Uighur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in northwestern China. She gave her first concert at the age of nine, and went on to study at the Beijing Music Academy, becoming first female singer to take the highest degree (MA). In 1984 she also became known in the West after taking 2nd prize in the 1st International Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki. Thereafter, she has appeared regularly with the Finnish National Opera.

Her success was followed by invitations to appear in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. Dilbèr has sung in opera houses in Bonn, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Bremen, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Stockholm and Helsinki, and has worked with numerous major orchestras, conductors and directors. Among her principal roles are: Zerbinetta, Sophie (Werther), Gilda, Lucia, Rosina, the Queen of the Night, Oscar, Adina and Olympia. Alongside her operatic and oratorio career, she has given lied recitals and appeared as an orchestral soloist in Europe, North America, and in Asia and has recorded works from the operatic and Lied repertoire.
