Gerald Finley's debut-album on Ondine is devoted to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich with Thomas Sanderling conducting the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. It includes the premiere recording of the orchestral version of Scottish Ballad ‘Annie Laurie'. Six Romances on Verses by English Poets is recorded for the first time sung in English, with the original full orchestra version from 1943.
Also featured on the disc is the Suite on Poems by Michelangelo, in which the orchestral version is recorded here for the first time in the original Italian language. Gerald Finley, who has studied medieval Italian, gives an assured performance of this little-known masterpiece and sheds further light on the subject in his thoughtful essay which appears in the booklet.
