Considered by specialist critics as one of the most renowned cellists of his generation, Asier Polo has collaborated as a soloist with some of the most highly regarded orchestras on the international stage: Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionalle della RAI, Dresdner Philharmonie, Orchestre de Paris, BBC Philharmonic, Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, Orquesta Nacional de México, Orquesta Sinfónica de Sao Paulo, Louisiana Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Nacional de España and Basel Symphony Orchestra.
It is worth highlighting his devotion to contemporary music, especially that of his native country. Promoter of new works, composers such as Gabriel Erkoreka, Jesús Torres, Luis de Pablo, Jesús Villa-Rojo, Fernando Velázquez and Antón García Abril have all dedicated their cello concertos to him.
Together with the Orquesta Nacional de España, conducted by Juanjo Mena, he has recorded the two cello concertos by Joaquín Rodrigo, and the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 2 by Alberto Ginastera. Asier Polo studied with E. Pascu, M. Kliegel and I. Monighetti. He also received expert advice from J. Starker, N. Gutman and M. Rostropovich at various master classes. He soon began to set himself apart, winning First Prizes in cello and chamber music at the National Young Musicians Competition in Spain.
He has received numerous awards, including the Ojo Crítico by Radio Nacional de España, the CEOE Foundation Award for Musical Performance and the National Music Award by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain. In 2009, he was awarded “Ilustre de Bilbao” (an award which aims to recognise those who have left a positive mark on the city).
Asier Polo plays a Francesco Ruggeri cello (Cremona, 1689) purchased in collaboration with the Banco Santander Foundation.
