Erkki Salmenhaara (1941-2002)

Erkki Salmenhaara studied composition at the Sibelius Academy with Joonas Kokkonen (diploma 1963) and in Vienna with György Ligeti in the early 1960's. Salmenhaara began his career as an avant-grade composer but discovered his personal style with a return to tonality. Salmenhaara was also a distinguished music historician. He worked as a professor in musicology at the Helsinki University.
