Press review

Isokoski captures every nuance of the text while at the same time retaining that special, slightly understated intimacy of expression that both the poetry and the music demand. Pianist Marita Viitasalo is very much an equal partner in the proceedings, projecting Hindemith's often bare and potentially clunky writing (...) with unflagging elegance and limpid tone.
David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com, February 2010, Disc of the Month, Artistic Quality 10 / Sound Quality 10

Where it counts, Isokoski and her partner catch the essence of Hindemith's music to near perfection.  (...) This newcomer is now the version to have.
Guy Richards, Gramophone, February 2010

If you like Hindemith, you cannot go wrong with this deeply felt performance of the cycle that comes with illuminating notes by Giselher Schubert of the Hindemith Institute.
Robert A. Moore, American Record Guide, January/February 2010

Erst Soile Isokoski liefert (...) mit dieser CD die Referenzeinspielung. (...) Unverzichtbar!

Miquel Cabruja, Klassik.com, 20.1.2010

Hindemith's cycle on Rilke poems, a highlight of his career, may never have sounded better. Even in the composer's more muted revision of the youthful original, Isokoski shines.
Anne Midgette, The Washington Post, December 20, 2009, The best of 2009: Classical music: No. 1

Giselher Schubert, Fono Forum, Dezember 2009, Musik ***** / Klang *****

This cycle is a tour de force. (...) Soile Isokoski is the first really big-name singer to record it since Gundula Janowitz 20 years ago. (...This recording) will become the benchmark as it's so far ahead of any competition.
Anne Ozorio, Opera Today, 12 November 2009

Brigitte Kempken, Das Opernglas, November 2009

Manuel Brug, Die Welt, 8. Oktober 2010

Johannes Saltzwedel, KulturSPIEGEL, Oktober 2009

(...) Kamarimusiikillinen yhteistyö Marita Viitasalon kanssa on vuosikymmenien hiomaa. Ondinen äänitys on hienosti balanssissa.
Risto Nordell, YLE Radio 1, 24.9.09

Complete description

On this disc, soprano Soile Isokoski and her longtime piano duo partner Marita Viitasalo perform Paul Hindemith's Das Marienleben ("The Life of the Virgin Mary"), a musical setting for voice and piano of Rainer Maria Rilke's cycle of fifteen poems of the same name. The work remains one of Hindemith's key masterpieces and Glenn Gould once called it, "the greatest song cycle ever written." This recording features Hindemith's revised 1948 version.

Soile Isokoski is hailed as one of the finest singers in the world ("Isokoski's lyric soprano is like liquid gold." - David L. Kirk, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009). Her CDs for Ondine have been praised as top-choice recordings and garnered the highest distinctions at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, Gramophone Awards and MIDEM Classical Awards.

The booklet includes expert notes by Giselher Schubert (Hindemith Institute, Frankfurt/Main), as well as the complete song texts in the original German and in English translation.
