Press review

A particularly clear recording (...) helps make this one of the most impressive accounts of the (Mendelssohn Concerto) available. (...) In the Concerto (...) Tetzlaff takes us right to the intimate heart of the slow movement, after which the pure, luminous D major sonorities of the finale make a particularly stirring effect.
Duncan Druce, Gramophone, February 2012

Christian Tetzlaff is an absolutely fabulous violinist, and this repertoire suits him perfectly. (...) The couplings are perfectly chosen and even more impressive, if possible. (...) Superb engineering, ideally balanced, puts the finishing touch on an irresistible release.
David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com, January 2012, Artistic Quality 10 / Sound Quality 10

Christian Tetzlaff versucht (...) eine Annäherung beider Werke (von Schumann und Mendelssohn), die ihm auch auf eine sehr überzeugende Weise gelingt.
Alain Steffen, Pizzicato, Januar 2012

(In the Mendelssohn Concerto) Tetzlaff and Järvi are as one (...). This uncommonly interesting CD is well worth the attention of the genuine lover of echt-Romantic repertoire. The recording quality and balance throughout are first-class (...). I enthusiastically recommend this disc.

Robert Matthew-Walker, International Record Review, January 2012

It is typical of Christian Tetzlaff's questing musical intelligence that he should choose to launch his new association with the label Ondine not with a conventional pairing of the Mendelssohn violin concerto with one of its usual recording partners (...) but frames it instead with two of the most problematic works in the Romantic violin concerto repertory, and makes a total success of all of them. (...) for the first time in my experience, Tetzlaff's performances more than compensate for their shortcomings. (...) his way of presenting the Mendelssohn concerto as if it were a new discovery is exceptional, too.
Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 15 December 2011

Christian Tetzlaff is a supreme advocate of the (Schumann Violin Concerto's) characteristic mixture of bravura and sensitive lyricism. The performance of the Mendelssohn concerto is a pure delight.
Geoffrey Norris, The Telegraph, 26 November 2011

Ondinen suuren luokan viulistikiinnitys Christian Tetzlaff ei petä.
Jukka Isopuro, Helsingin Sanomat, 2.11.2011

Complete description

This CD, his first release on Ondine, features German star violinist Christian Tetzlaff with virtuoso Romantic concertos by Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann.

The Mendelssohn Concerto is one of the most frequently performed violin concertos of all time, with an unfailing popularity among audiences. One of Schumann's last significant compositions, the long-lost Violin Concerto saw its première performance only in 1937, and was hailed by Yehudi Menuhin as the "historically missing link of the violin literature." Also included is Schumann's more seldom recorded Fantasy for Violin and orchestra, which he completed shortly before writing the Concerto.

Christian Tetzlaff is accompanied on this recording by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - whose Artist-in-Residence he became in 2008/09 - and their acclaimed music director Paavo Järvi.
