Conductor and composer Leif Segerstam, 80, passes away (10.10.2024)


Leif Segerstam, the iconic Finnish conductor and composer, known as a tireless champion of contemporary music, has passed away after a short illness.
 
 
Ondine joins the family and friends of Leif Segerstam in remembrance of his memory.
 
 
Ondine's extensive collaboration with Leif Segerstam started in 1994. The release of Einojuhani Rautavaara's 7th Symphony, Angel of Light, in April 1996 was a major international sensation and earned him a Grammy nomination as well as a Cannes Classical Award in 1997. The album to follow, featuring Rautavaara's Angels and Visitations, Violin Concerto and Isle of Bliss also won a Cannes Classical Award the following year.
 
 
During the years to follow, Leif Segerstam released over 30 albums on Ondine, including many award-winning recordings and culminating in a complete Sibelius symphony cycle in 2004. Leif Segerstam's Ondine discography forms an essential part of Ondine's history.
