Dietrich Henschel, baritone

Dietrich Henschel began his international career with the title roles of two opera productions: Henze's Der Prinz von Homburg at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Busoni's Doktor Faust at the Opéra National de Lyon. These appearances were followed immediately by engagements at the two opera houses in Paris: at the Châtelet Gluck's Alceste with Gardiner, Doktor Faust with Nagano and Die schweigsame Frau with Dohnanyi; at the Opéra National de Paris he appeared as Pelléas in Bob Wilson's legendary production of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande and as the Count in Robert Carsen's production of Strauss Capriccio.

Mr Henschel's opera repertory includes, among others, Monteverdi (Orfeo, Ulisse), Mozart (Count, Don Giovanni), Rossini (Barber, Dandini), Wagner (Wolfram, Beckmesser), Strauss (Barber in Schweigsame Frau, Count and Oliver in Capriccio), as well as the opera of the 20th century, like Busoni's Doktor Faustus, Berg's Wozzeck, Henze's Der Prinz von Homburg, and Zimmermann's Die Soldaten.

He regularly appears at the opera houses in Berlin, Cologne, Brussels, Geneva, Zurich, Lyon and Paris, as well as at international festivals like Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and the Maggio Musicale in Florence with conductors Harnoncourt, Gardiner, Eschenbach, Dohnanyi, Nagano, Thielemann and Mehta.

He is particularly focused on concert and Lied, and gives recitals throughout Europe and Japan, accompanied by Irwin Gage, Helmut Deutsch, Fritz Schwinghammer, and Shinya Okahara.
