Silvestre Revueltas was a violinist, conductor, and composer during the Mexican Revolution (1910–20) and Spanish Civil War (1936–39). He studied in Mexico (Durango and Mexico City) and the United States (Chicago, IL and Austin, TX). He was a theater-orchestra violinist in San Antonio, TX, and conducted an orchestra in Mobile, AL. He served associate conductor of the Mexico Symphony Orchestra at the invitation of Carlos Chávez and taught violin and composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City.
His film music, chamber music, songs, and works for orchestra combined unique tone colors and complex rhythmic structures with indigenous Mexican culture.
